Musings of an Unemployed Customer Support Engineer

Update

Time flies when you’re ignoring your blog!  Amirite?!

When last we spoke, I missed a friend passing away and I was tangling with The Iron Yard ceasing operations after my cohort.

Fast forward… I made it to graduation!  Was there any doubt that I’d get to that point? There sure as hell was!  Maybe one day I’ll recount the full story, but in a nutshell, I suffered in silence, fell way behind, had a “come to Jesus” moment with my instructors, ugly cried once, got caught up with help from our TA, decided that I’d focus on Front End Engineering, then… graduation!

The family was able to fly in for graduation and that was incredibly special. Mom, who has been my champion and chief roaster, got to be there to see me finish something.  Chad, my cousin, got to be there, too.  I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned it before, but one of my Iron Yard instructors was one of his mentors and instructors, too. Dang, is that even grammatically correct?  My brain is mush.

So what’s next?  The hard part.

The class was split into 4 groups and we’re now working on our final projects.  I’ve been assigned to the Fan Club Portals group.  Two of the projects were actually ideas that I’d suggested.  I’m assigned to one, but I’m also eager to see the other one brought to life.

So how is it working on this project?  GitHub is kicking my ass this week. Working with my team mates has been great, they’re awesome.  But combining our code?  Holy crap… it’s a problem that we’ve run into continuously since we’ve started the project.  I tried get us into a routine.  First thing you do before working… pull from the master.  Change over to your branch (We named each branch for the issue that we’re working on).  Merge the master into your branch.  Examine any conflicts CLOSELY, make changes as needed, SAVE.  Do git add . to add all.  Then, git commit -m “Your message here”.  THEN git push origin BRANCHNAME.  I wrote it all down, tested it to make sure that I’d written everything down correctly.

Right now, I’m having trouble merging the master into my branch. A file opens in Atom and then something is supposed to happen, but I couldn’t get through Stack Overflow without wanting to bash my head against the wall.  It’s holding up my progress and as a result, blocks the team from working on anything that’s tied to my part.

In any case, it’ll have to wait until the morning because my brain is mush. Good night!
